Teachers Who Change Lives

“You have to first believe you can do it.”

Those words, spoken by my fifth grade teacher, changed the trajectory of my school life.

Before that, I was a struggling student—failing in math, falling behind in reading comprehension, and, as a result, struggling in nearly every subject. I didn’t just suspect I wasn’t capable; I believed it.

After all, my fourth-grade report card had all but confirmed it.

Extra work at home didn’t seem to help. Having smart friends encouraged me, but their study habits never quite became my own. I felt stuck—quiet, discouraged, and convinced that this was just who I was.

Then came  Mr. Hopp.

Fresh out of college, energetic and athletic, he brought a new vision into the classroom—one where failure wasn’t an identity.

A couple months into the school year, he asked me to stay in during recess. My stomach churned as I looked at the stack of my work on his desk.

He asked me how I felt about it.

I couldn’t bring myself to say the words. I just shook my head, eyes down.

Didn’t my poor grades explain it? I was quiet—not for lack of thoughts, but fear of saying what I knew was true about me.

But instead of agreeing, he spoke life into a belief I didn’t yet have: “You have to first believe you can do it.”

Something shifted.

That year became a turning point—not just in how I studied or performed, but in how I saw myself. For the first time, I began to believe that change was possible.

That’s the power of words. And even more, the power of teachers who choose, every single day, to invest in the lives of students.

Many of us have that special teacher who made all the difference.

Life changing? Absolutely.

So here’s to the teachers—the ones who see beyond the grades, who speak belief before it exists, and who help shape who we become.
